Looks like the adults are, as usual, pointing toward the youth to reason through this issue. The youth are the bad guys for choosing to specialize, or for choosing to not participate at all. Teachers hold you to a higher standard compared to the mainstream student - calling you out in class for behaviors that they tolerate from others around you; coaches talk about you behind your back to other teachers and coaches, spouting directives that you and your family haven't even discussed; coaches double punish you for mistakes you made outside of school and sport; school administrators take a 0 tolerance policy stance for your mistakes, but let mainstream students blatantly break school rules on a daily basis without any repercussions; absolutely no grace is given to you by teachers in regards to homework assignments even though you just traveled 10 hours on a bus round trip to represent your school in an athletic contest; you are berated in front of your teammates for mistakes in your sport that are simply part of learning the game because your coach is intimidated by someone higher up the chain and afraid of getting axed from his or her job; you are being coached by second rate coaches that know less than your AAU coach did at the elementary school level; your administration does not listen to your parents and the parents of your friends when they approach administration to report abusive behavior by coaches, thus the abuse continues season after season; you are subjected to poor coaching, thus a loosing season, year after year because your administrator is afraid to fire the coach for poor outcomes. I could go on and on. But you get my drift. We need to look deeper into the culture of sports in Montana and begin to make the athlete important in the eyes of the school again. I don't want to see us go back to the old days where meat head antics were tolerated and swept under the carpet, but I do think the pendulum has swung too hard in the opposite direction. Now that the adults are feeling the effect in declining numbers to the point of being startling, maybe someone will begin to listen.
