Scattered about the film is Hammer’s trademark gothic set design and gloomy atmosphere weighing heavily on the action. Frankly, the film gets far flashing Hammer’s calling card, and you get the impression that if director John Pogue had solely committed to the gothic blueprint, The Quiet Ones would have been an old-fashioned success. After all, Hammer found an audience with a taste for undead ghouls, Frankenstein monsters, and gentlemanly vampires in the ‘50s, a time when atomic monsters, extraterrestrials, and giant bugs were the hot ticket at local movie palaces and drive-ins. What would prevent it from working in the smartphone age? Sadly, where The Quiet Ones drops the ball is with the application of the “found footage†approach that has been sweeping through American horror movies. While it is exciting to think that Hammer is attempting to modernize itself a bit, it quickly becomes obvious that it’s here simply to allow Hammer to run with the current big boys of horror. What is even more frustrating is the fact that the filmmakers are clearly experimenting with this technique and had absolutely no idea how to apply it properly. It’s painfully clumsy and only twice does the film milk any suspense from this approach. However, the impact of both sequences is softened by cheap jump scares that just come off as lazy and pathetic. You mean to tell us that Hammer—a company that made some seriously silly, low-budget junk work splendidly in their heyday—couldn’t devise any new or creative ways to make the audience tremble with fear?! r The report said the BLM had failed to conduct inspections on more than 2,100 of the 3,702 wells that it had specified as "high priority" and drilled from 2009 through 2012. They are observatories, and you may ask questions of the astronomy teacher, Mark Korbitz, tonight at Community Conversations, 7 p.m. at The Barista.Over the past several years the Otero Junior College Administration, Science Department, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Program have invested in the development of new academic opportunities for students (Agriculture, Medical Technology, etc.) as well as worked consistently to reach out to K-12 schools and enhance existing college courses here by purchasing equipment, scheduling guest presenters, providing travel opportunities to students/faculty, and collaborating with existing institutions such as the Air Force Academy (Falcon Telescope Network), United States Forest Service (paleontology research), and the Deep Space Exploration Society (Plishner Radio Telescope Dish near Haswell, Colorado). The next significant course enhancement project intended to provide research and learning opportunities for OJC physics/astronomy students, as well as area K-12 students and members of the public, involves the construction of a fully steerable, remotely controlled radio-telescope interferometer capable of receiving weak radiofrequency signals from distant emitting objects and discreet sources in outer space. That project was approved by the Plainview School District Board last week and installation will take place later in the summer. From the Earth s surface, astronomical observations can be effectively done only in two relatively transparent windows through the atmosphere for specific regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The relevant parts of the spectrum are visible light and radio frequencies. Visible light astronomy is hampered by clouds, precipitation, and the daytime brightness of the Sun as well as by light pollution produced by city lights. Radio astronomy, on the other hand, can be done day or night, rain or shine, and is best suited for studying things like black holes, pulsars, star forming regions in the Milky Way Galaxy, dark, low albedo asteroids, and other phenomena not easily visible through optical telescopes. Ideal locations for radio-telescopes are usually remote rural areas with few, if any, nearby radio/microwave transmitters or cell towers in the immediate vicinity. Limiting cellphone use reduces interference with possible astronomical sources that can be overwhelmed by much stronger signals originating on Earth. One disadvantage of using longer wavelengths (radio) to do astronomy is the fact that resolution of small and very distant objects using any kind of telescope is directly related to wavelength. This means that radio-telescopes need to be very large, hundreds of feet across ideally, to resolve individual objects in space. One way to avoid incredible expense and many of the engineering challenges involved in building huge individual antenna dishes is to use two or more small dishes and combine the signals from each of the separate antennas in what is called an interferometer. This is exactly what is proposed for the Plainview School campus by using two donated dishes approximately 15 feet in diameter and other equipment purchased by the STEM Program at OJC, including radio receivers that are being built by Radio Astronomy Supplies, a company in Texas.Page 2 of 2 - Approximately three years ago, the U.S. Air Force Academy (Dr. Francis Chun) contacted President Jim Rizzuto to propose including OJC in an astronomical program called the Falcon Telescope Network. Over time that 20 mirror diameter fully automated telescope was installed and is nearly fully operational (there are a few software/remote access issues still being resolved). That telescope is housed in the taller observatory dome located just west of the Colorado State Forest Service Building on San Juan Ave. The second dome, just west of the FTN facility, was donated to the college by Dr. Johnston who recently passed away in Boulder, Colorado. He had installed the dome and telescopes at a property in Nineview. They currently have two smaller telescopes under that dome, a 12 inch diameter mirror Dobsonian telescope and an 11 inch diameter mirror Celestron that is capable of remote and automated control with a digital camera attached. Both facilities will be accessible to the public for tours and educational programs once the site is finished and cleaned up. michael kors outlet store The AFP tracked the two men, recording their movements at a meeting in Melbourne in late April, when two phones were purchased under false names. cheap air jordans
POB 982 Kfar Sava
g cheap air jordans Location: Denver, CO cheap michael kors purses I realize that the odds are stacked against me. Yet, for some unidentifiable reason we tend to miss the target at some obvious junctures. Smoking has been identified as a hazard since the Surgeon Generals Report of more than 50 years ago. Yet, cigarettes are still sold across the counter to almost any young person who wants them. Nearly 10,000 American children are injured or killed by guns each year. Yet, guns proliferate in all areas of society. Texting while driving killed more than 3,000 children and youth last year. Yet, 20 percent of our states still permit that practice within their boundaries. And I hesitate to bring up the obvious youth, high school and college football problem.Yes, I know. Now I have begun to meddle. Football has become our national game. High school, college and NFL stadiums are filled each weekend through the fall, and those who dont attend are generally glued to their TV sets. Yet medical research casts a shadow over the entire structure of football as it is played at all levels. In recent days the brain injuries of professional football players have been in the news. Last year the National Football League faced a suit related to past head injuries, and settled at a level of $765 million. And there are only about 2000 active NFL players on 32 teams. The problem at lower levels dwarfs the liability faced by the NFL. There are more than 70,000 college players on approximately 1,500 teams in the U.S., and the number of high school, junior high and youth teams are impossible to count. Tragically, research shows that the younger the brain the more susceptible it is to injury. Suffice it to say that the number of young people we have involved in school-sanctioned jeopardy is in the millions. The potential financial cost of such jeopardy may well be into the trillions. And who can measure the human tragedy of a non-functioning brain?Worse, we know the problem exists, because of the published research, and still we continue to create opportunities for brain mayhem at younger and younger ages. We trust coaches who are schooled in the fundamentals of the sport. They spend, literally, years learning how to move a football down the field. Unfortunately, most high school and college coaches will admit to having no more than one or two courses that teach them how to protect the health of the young people in their charge. And youth coaches? What orientation/training program gets them ready to handle possible concussion problems? Just as bad, the technology of the equipment today has proven incapable of preventing the constant jarring that causes long-term brain injuries. From a personal perspective I lament the state of what has become our national game. I played it, coached it at both the high school and college levels and still love to watch the weekly pageantry through the fall season each year. Would I play it and coach it today considering all that is known about jeopardy to our young people? In a word, no. Page 2 of 2 - Dr. Mark L.
