We ate at Ma Harris's Cafe and one day I was coming from the Proving Ground after another load of gravel and two girls were walking the same way I was going. I blew my horn but they did not turn around. I drove about two blocks and went into the cafe and asked a boy who was working there if he knew those girls, James said. He said yes, that he went with the one walking by the ditch. I said, 'that's all right, I didn't see her,' then I asked him where they went to church and he said 'Bell's Chapel.' I was born in Blevins in 1924 and went to school in Blevins, Wilma said. Those were the war years and we only had six boys in our class. Ten had already joined some type of service. I had three brothers; one went into the U. S. Navy and two went into the U. S. Army. I had learned to type in high school, so in 1944, when I graduated from high school, I decided to go to Dallas with my cousin, she said. I didn't know many people there, but I wanted to see the country and I got a job at an insurance agency. I also worked in an airplane plant as a typist. I enjoyed traveling down there and I enjoyed my jobs. In the meantime, James had joined the Naval Air Force and was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas. When we saw the war was not going to be over quickly, we decided to get married, Wilma said. I joined him in Corpus Christi and we got married. I asked my leading chief if I could have two days off, and he asked why I wanted two days off, and I told him that I wanted to get married, James said. After he found out the reason, he told me yes, so we hopped in a cab to find a Nazarene church and the taxi driver asked if we had a witness. We told her 'no' and she offered to be our witness. We accepted that offer and she was our witness. After about nine months, James was sent to Oxnard, Calif. for more training. He stayed there for about six months. From Corpus Christi, Wilma took a train to California by herself and stayed with James until he was shipped out to Okinawa. She came back to Blevins and stayed with her folks. I flew U. S. Navy PB4 Catalinas and trained men how to fly them in Corpus, but as soon as I got to Okinawa, my officers told me that I couldn't fly the planes anymore because I knew too much about them, he said. In Okinawa, I was a flight engineer/mechanic. The Seabees would build airstrips, when planes would come in, somebody would have to work on them and that's what I did. Page 3 of 4 - I came home from Okinawa on November 30, 1945, he said. We lived part of the time in Waldo and part of the time in Blevins when I first got home. We also traveled around the South for about three months, looking for jobs. They were hard to come by. There was some help for veterans, however, he said. The government gave the veterans coming home from the war $25 a week for 52 weeks, James said. We were traveling so much that I only got about 11 checks. A buddy of mine told me that there might be work in Abilene, Texas, he said. I contacted a man with a crew who told me to be there Monday morning early to interview for an oilfield job. We were there Friday, and when I interviewed for the job on Monday, I was hired, James said. Our first child, Glenda Hugg, was born in Abilene in 1947. The couple and their newborn didn't stay that long in Abilene. He worked for the same surveying company from 1946 until 1957. We moved to 14 different states and Canada with that surveying job, James said. The second daughter of the family was born in 1951. Her name is Patsy Bonds, and she was born in Seagraves, Texas, and the couples' third child, Phil, was born in 1952 in Williston, North Dakota. The company I worked for put me on a survey crew, which is what I really enjoyed, he said. In 1957, the couple moved back to Blevins and bought a house and 40 acres. It was time to settle down after all three children were school aged, Wilma said. All three of our children were in school and we wanted some stability. After retirement, the couple still hasn't lost their wandering spirit. Although they have stayed put in Blevins for many years, there are still times when they just like to get away from it all. Page 4 of 4 - We traveled 6,700 miles with that survey crew, he said. That's a lot of traveling, but we still enjoy getting away from time to time. Once established in Blevins, they both decided that they were going to be involved in the community. Wilma has been involved with the PTA and has held all the positions that they offer; she has been active in her church since the beginning. She was active in the Missionary Society, and was a Sunday School teacher for 8-18 year olds for a long time. Wilma also served as the treasurer of the church for many years. James has also been active in the Blevins Community. He served on the school board for 15 years; he helped build the rural water system from 1999 until present day, which is also known by the name of Ozan Creek Water System; he has served on the Hempstead County Quorum Court, and has sat on the Farm Bureau board for many years. He also helped build the Blevins Volunteer Fire Department from the ground up. We got along well throughout the years and made sure that not one fight went unsettled, James said, with a grin. He is so sweet, so kind, and has been all these years, Wilma quipped. I've got my fingers crossed when I say that, with a hand behind my back. We've had a good life together, James said. It doesn't seem like it's been 70 years, it just seems like yesterday. My son Phil has been with me by my side in this business since he got out of high school, James said. He stayed and helped make this farm the success it is today.
