Cut-outs of human shapes with targets painted on them were part of the set by Danila Korogodsky, exemplifying his generally colorfully abstract and symbol-laden approach. Stravinsky’s music was superbly served by the small ensemble led by conductor Krystof Van Grysperre, and Alyssa Park’s violin playing must be singled out. They performed at the back of the stage, without amplification, thank goodness. Marsalis’ “Fiddler’s Tale,†written in 1998, uses Stravinsky’s same instrumentation and is an uncanny musical imitation of it even as it incorporates elements of New Orleans jazz. The libretto is by the jazz critic and novelist Stanley Crouch, who fashioned a mythic (and rather windy) story that portrays a record producer, Bubba Z. Beals, as the Devil who tempts the female violinist from her true musical path towards commercial, but remunerative, pap. Here we were treated to the narration by actor Roger Guenveur Smith, best known for his solo performances, who gave voice to all the parts as well as the narrators.
