"That won't happen now since capitol construction projects and hatchery upgrades have been postponed around the state."The Game and Fish plants fish in over 500 waters around the state. Each district puts in their fish requests two years in advance, not knowing if the fish would be available or not when the time comes. Each district has what they refer to as A and B priorities. While the distinction was initially for management purposes, with the budget decreases much the B Priority stocking levels were cut this year."Reductions this year won't really be felt right away," Zafft said. "Many of the fish are quite small when they're planted so the reductions won't be noticed for several years. They may not be noticed much at all if they occur just one year. If they persist, then anglers will start to catch fewer fish."In efforts to reduce the impacts, most waters still have new fish stocked this year but the total numbers are down. For example, 12,000 rainbow trout were planted this spring at Crystal Reservoir. This is down from the original plan of 32,000. The 5,000 brown trout also in the plan will not be planted this year.On the plus side, 20,000 rainbow trout were stocked in Crystal Reservoir last year."There are still plenty of fish," McDonald said. "Reducing the rainbow trout and missing one year of brown trout won't be a problem since those would have been small fish."The fish planted at Sloans and Absarraca lakes are larger "catchable" fish. McDonald said these fish were a B Priority so initially would not have been planted this year based on their priority."We made adjustments, though, and were able to get fish for both lakes," McDonald said. "That means reducing fish planted elsewhere, though."The reductions, in this case, were to Teton Reservoir south of Rawlins.Overall, there's a 15.7 percent reduction in the number of fish stocked in the Laramie Region, which includes Laramie County, but it is spread out so that no one fishery is being hit particularly harder than another.The good news is that budget declines appear to have ended. Zafft said that's due to two primary factors. First, the Game and Fish has seen increased federal revenues from the Pittman Robertson Act. These funds come from a tax on ammunition and firearms used for sport hunting."With the increase in gun and ammo purchases nationwide, we have seen increased funding," Zafft said. "We've also seen a bump up in fish license purchases." Cheyenne area and Laramie Basin fishing conditions While there are reductions in fish stocking rates this season, with healthy water levels the fishing is expected to be quite good. Also, thanks to construction of a new aeration system at Meebour Lake last fall, the fish there made it through the winter."We've had winter kill there the last couple seasons but that didn't happen this year," McDonald said. "The fish stocked last year are now 16-17 inches in length and will likely get to 20 inches by the end of the summer. We've also added 9-10 inch fish this spring that should be 17 inches by the fall."The cutthroat and rainbow trout at Gelatt Lake, where one of the old Meebour Lake aerators was placed last fall, also made it through the winter."We have two aerators there now and they worked quite well," McDonald said.The fish there range from about 12 to 15 inches in length.One other reservoir that has had winter kills issues in the past also came through this winter in fine shape. Alsop Lake, off of Herrick Lane, has some "very nice" trout that made it through the winter. This lake also received one of the old Meebour Lake aerators."The water level in Alsop is quite low," McDonald said. "It's looking good to get more water to it this year."Anglers are reminded that Alsop is managed as a trophy fishery with the use of flies and lures only. There is a two fish limit, with each at least 16 inches in length.Anglers report catching some real lunkers at Lake Hattie."The fishing there is slower," McDonald said. "But the size of the fish makes it worth it. Anglers are hauling in 6 to 8 pound fish."Twin Buttes Reservoir has experienced somewhat of a revival the last two years. Where once water levels were very low and the water quality poor, there is now a healthy fishery."There are three age classes of rainbow trout now," McDonald said. "We're also resuming the addition of brown trout. They don't grow as quickly but are quite nice for fall angling."It'll be a while yet before there's access to the higher elevation lakes in the Medicine Bow Mountains. Both Rob Roy Reservoir and Lake Owen are expected to offer excellent fishing this season, especially for those who enjoy catching lively brook trout.East of town, Pole Mountain is always particularly popular early in the season.
