The Burros beat Temple City 8-2 in the wild card round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs on Tuesday, a win highlighted by a five-run third inning that shifted the contest in BHS favor. It was outstanding I was happy for the kids and I m happy for the program. They played absolutely unbelievably yesterday, Burros head coach John Bradley said. It was a fun game, and it was an intense game we battled all day. The game started in back and forth fashion. In the top of the first, Burros starting pitcher Ryan Sanford hit a leadoff single that featured a friendly bounce, and scored two at-bats later on an RBI double from center fielder Biggie Hernandez the Rams answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame to tie the score 1-1. Ryan Sanford took the first pitch of the game back up the middle their second baseman came over to make the play and the ball took a hop right over the top of him, Bradley said. That right there is the baseball gods taking care of Burroughs baseball Ryan was safe, we moved him over and then Biggie hit one of the hardest baseballs I ve seen a kid hit all year. After a scoreless second inning, Burroughs (15-7) broke the game open with five runs on seven hits in the top of the third. The Burros grabbed a 6-1 lead while sending 10 batters to the plate. We get to the third inning and we just unleash that s when the hits started coming, Bradley said. We came alive. Sanford and third baseman Stephen Hillis led off the inning with singles, and Sanford scored from third base on a one-out single by shortstop Jase Young to put BHS in front 2-1. With runners on first and second for left fielder JP Pooley, the junior smacked the second pitch he faced over the left field fence for a three-run home run the first of his career. That was a big deal everybody was pretty excited for him. Pooley has been hitting the ball really well the kid can hit and he s gotten so much better at the plate, Bradley said. It was a big turning point for us when Pooley hits that three-run dinger it pushes us up to 5-1. Temple City definitely put their heads down when that happened. Catcher Jeremiah Johnson drew a walk after Pooley s long ball, and scored after back-to-back two-out singles. Young fell behind 3-0 on the first batter he faced, but bounced back with two strikes before inducing a ground ball that led to an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play the first of three Burroughs would turn in the last three innings.The Burros added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Burroughs ended the game with a 6-4-3 double play. That defensive play punctuated the Burros first postseason victory since 2011. To end the the game on a double play is outstanding, Bradley said. It s not an insult, but it s almost like kicking sand in somebody s face when you turn a double play to end the game. Sanford (W, 5-2) allowed two runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings to pick up the victory. The senior struck out three, walked two and hit two in a 95-pitch outing the Rams put runners on base against him in each of the first four innings.Page 3 of 3 - Ryan did a good job pitching out of problems, Bradley said. He wasn t on top of his game, but he battled he went out and got it done. Young scattered two hits in 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. He struck out one and needed only 22 pitches to close out Temple City, the third-place finisher in the Rio Hondo League. Temple City was a good team they were a scrappy team, Bradley said.At the plate, Sanford went 4-for-4 with four singles, two runs and a stolen base in Tuesday s victory. First baseman Richie Villa was 2-for-4, Pooley went 1-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, and Hernandez, Young and Roth each had a hit and an RBI.
