It is time to get past the idea that this state is so unique that it has to measure itself by its own education yardsticks. The Common Core is about making certain that young people can compete against others from other states and nations. The world does not stop at Wyoming s borders. Its students must be able to succeed in the bigger world.4 Wyoming should have its own curriculum. The state gets exactly that with the Common Core Standards. Those are just benchmarks, expectations for what students should learn. This state then builds its curriculum around them as it sees fit. It chooses which books its young people read. It chooses how they do algebra. Lesson plans, texts, resources, choices in technology, methods of teaching all lie in the control of Wyoming and its school districtsThis is where parents and districts can get involved: with the curriculum. HB 97 wants parents to take part in the setting of the standards, but few have the expertise to do that, and politics should not be mixed into the debate.5 Wyoming needs to protect its students data. A major misconception is that the Common Core is driving massive collection and storing of individuals students data. Performance results and other data always have been kept by the state in the aggregate. No one has fretted about the Wyoming Department of Education misusing that information. Reporting of these data will be essential if Wyoming hopes to compare itself with others as well as national and international norms.
