The issue: A House committee last week approved House Bill 97. It would toss away the Common Core Standards. We believe: This effort is being driven by fear, misinformation and anti-federalism. HB 97 would hinder school reform efforts in Wyoming.Tell us what you think: Contact us via email at ."Paranoia strikes deep. Into your life it will creep. It starts when you re always afraid ..." "For What It s Worth," Buffalo SpringfieldIf you listen to opponents of the Common Core Standards, you would think that the federal government is lining troops up on the border, ready to seize control of Cowboy State schools.Nothing could be further from the truth. But that hasn t stopped some on the rabid right from preying on the fears of the people of this state when it comes to federal involvement in anything in Wyoming. House Bill 97 is in play in the state House. Its goal is to put the Common Core in the wastebasket. This wrongheaded effort should be turned away. HB 97 has the potential to push Wyoming s school reform and accountability efforts backward by a decade or more. Given that this state s schools already are non-competitive on a national, much less global, basis, that would be a serious mistake. There is no genuine education group in Wyoming that is opposed to the Common Core teachers, administrators, school boards. The experts see its value even as the politicians and the paranoid twist half-baked facts into conspiracy theory. The underlying truth getting lost in all of this is that these standards were not even developed by the feds. They were put together by the nation s governors with the goal of creating world-class standards that would help America s children compete in a global economy. All education stakeholders were involved in the process: education experts, state and school district leaders, teachers and parents. That s bottom-up government, folks.Unfortunately, the Obama administration latched onto the Common Core Standards early. It saw their potential and began to champion them, even folding them into its programs. But just because the president or his staff likes them does not mean they are not a good thing or that they are part of a grand conspiracy to take over the schools.Indeed, Wyomingites should be proud of the fact that their State Board of Education and other leaders saw early on that these standards have the potential to lift Wyoming s schools. Laramie County School District 1 was among those out front, moving to the Common Core even ahead of the rest of the state. The rigor of the standards already is being felt by students in Cheyenne. Here are some of the wrong-headed themes hidden in HB 97:1 Wyoming needs its own standards. No, it doesn t. Opponents admit that the Common Core is better than the state s older standards, but they argue that the state can do better on its own. Better than standards that have been internationally benchmarked and researched by some of the best minds in America? How? And why would this state set itself back three or four more years to await these new standards? Bad idea.2 Wyoming needs its own test to measure student performance in its own way. Again, why? Being part of a national test consortium assures this state a voice in the exam while allowing for measurement of student success on an equal footing. It is time that Wyoming find out where its students stand across states and compared to national (and global) norms. Or are those who claim Wyoming s schools are excellent afraid to find out otherwise?3 Wyoming needs to go its own way. It is time to get past the idea that this state is so unique that it has to measure itself by its own education yardsticks. The Common Core is about making certain that young people can compete against others from other states and nations. The world does not stop at Wyoming s borders. Its students must be able to succeed in the bigger world.4 Wyoming should have its own curriculum. The state gets exactly that with the Common Core Standards. Those are just benchmarks, expectations for what students should learn. This state then builds its curriculum around them as it sees fit. It chooses which books its young people read. It chooses how they do algebra. Lesson plans, texts, resources, choices in technology, methods of teaching all lie in the control of Wyoming and its school districtsThis is where parents and districts can get involved: with the curriculum. HB 97 wants parents to take part in the setting of the standards, but few have the expertise to do that, and politics should not be mixed into the debate.5 Wyoming needs to protect its students data. A major misconception is that the Common Core is driving massive collection and storing of individuals students data. Performance results and other data always have been kept by the state in the aggregate. No one has fretted about the Wyoming Department of Education misusing that information. Reporting of these data will be essential if Wyoming hopes to compare itself with others as well as national and international norms. That is not conspiracy; it is measurement. Our hope is that the more level-headed in the Legislature will block HB 97, which is built on the foundations of fear, innuendo and conspiracy theory. The Common Core has the power to move Wyoming s schools forward. HB 97 would send this state in the opposite direction.Readers who want the facts can check out the Common Core State Standards Initiative website at . bottega veneta outlet Shriners Hospitals for Children-Spokane sees nearly 2,500 new patients each year with 11 percent of them coming from Montana.
