The issue: Two candidates, including incumbent U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., are competing in the Aug. 19 Republican primary election for U.S. House. We believe: Ms. Lummis has shown real growth as a representative. We recommend her.Tell us what you think: Contact us via email at .There was a time when the term "radical Republican" could be used to describe current U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo.She seemed out of touch with the mainstream views of her constituents, and when she aligned herself with the tea party Republicans in the House, we thought a sensible conservative voice for Wyoming was gone. What a difference a few years make. The WTE Editorial Board was pleasantly surprised when it met with Ms. Lummis as she seeks a fourth term in the U.S. House. As this state's only representation on that body, it's crucial that she fight for all Wyomingites, not just for the vocal radicals. It's because U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., has canned the vitriol and matured as a politician that the board recommends that she continue as the state's lone U.S. representative.Ms. Lummis appears to be on top of her game right now. She displayed a thorough understanding of the issues in the race, has solutions in mind to move Wyoming and the nation forward and even seems to have learned the value of reaching across party lines to get things done. Her opponent, Jason Senteney, on the other hand, seems to have not thought through his ideas, which include repealing the 16th Amendment on income taxes. He also would eliminate the EPA. Both of these - and many of his other ideas - sound like pipe dreams. And even if he was elected, he never could form a consensus in the House to move these proposals forward.Mr. Senteney seems like an armchair politician: He has big ideas but no ways to implement them. For example, his plan to kill the IRS and institute a national sales tax that starts at 12 percent and moves down as the years go by might sound great. But he fails to consider how much cities and counties depend on sales taxes. When pressed, he told the board not to worry, cities would still get their funds. Really? How?Or on the EPA. Mr. Senteney would get rid of the agency and rely on local entities to protect the environment. While we agree that changes are needed concerning the EPA, we don't see how shuttering the agency would help. In fact, it could create many more problems, as one of the federal agency's duties is to act as a referee between the states to keep one from polluting another.Ms. Lummis, thankfully, is a realist and understands the complexities of getting legislation through the U.S. Capitol. When asked which issues she felt were the most important in this race, she named things like natural resources and rolling back fed regulations that prohibit economic growth, issues that directly affect Wyomingites. Like Mr. Senteney, she says EPA's overreach is hurting this state's economy. But her approach is to find ways to mitigate some of the agency's tendencies. Both candidates told the board it is critical that this nation bring down its trillion-dollar debt. But neither offered concrete solutions to the problem. On health care, Ms. Lummis chanted the well-worn mantra of "Repeal Obamacare," while Mr. Senteney says there should be no mandate to buy insurance. While we are far from being Obamacare supporters, we would like to see a replacement solution, not just blind opposition. The 10-point plan from U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., would be a good starting point. Perhaps Ms. Lummis could try to sell that as an option. On energy issues, both candidates say coal is still the best energy value for the price, and we agree. We also agree with Ms. Lummis that the Obama administration needs to quit picking winners and losers in the energy sector and focus more on basic research to discover ways to make coal cleaner or to safely move this nation to nuclear power.Social Security is a hot topic now, with estimates that it could become depleted in less than 30 years. Ms. Lummis is taking a chance at offending the program's supporters by proposing to move the age of retirement from 65 to 70, starting with today's 6-year-olds. That might not be the answer, but it could begin to move the debate forward.Mr. Senteney's solution is to put Social Security money into an untouchable trust fund. While that is a start, we don't see how that would keep the fund from depleting. More baby boomer Americans will be using the funds, and there currently are not enough younger Americans to pay into it.On the economy, we're still scratching our heads at Mr. Senteney's solution: He says Congress should encourage people to buy American products. We're all for that, but what is exactly American anymore? Toyota, for example, is not a U.S. company, but it employs thousands of Americans. This idea also could backfire, making U.S. companies complacent while forcing up prices of goods.Ms. Lummis is more practical, saying Congress needs to roll back a lot of government regulations and make some key reforms to Obamacare, which she sees as a drag on business. That sounds like a reasonable approach to the problem and not simply platitudes offered as solutions. We were pleased that both candidates see the need to work across the aisle to form coalitions instead of supporting the partisanship displayed in Congress the last couple of years. Ms. Lummis, of course, has been a part of that stalemate, but she says she is learning to work with others who may not see things the way she does. Good for her.Mr. Senteney has a confidence that scares us a bit. He sees solutions to the nation's and Wyoming's problems in black and white, and he believes there are easy fixes to complicated problems. He may be a viable candidate some day, but Wyoming cannot afford a representative who is just now learning the ropes. One board member said Mr. Senteney is not ready for prime time. We agree. On the other hand, U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., has proven herself a solid representative of the state's interests on the national level, which is why we are recommending her for the Aug. 19 primary. Wyoming needs a proven leader who knows how to get things done. Ms. Lummis is clearly the best candidate to make that happen. cheap toms With 31 weekly flights already servicing the Doha-Muscat route, the increase in passenger demand has led the airline to add an additional four flights, bringing the total number of flights up to 35 per week.
