Born on a hot summer day, July 31, 1927, at Haynes, he was a child of the Great Depression. Growing up in those times, from an early age he knew a lot about hard work and poverty in spite of hard work. In the Depression days of food lines and destitution, even as a boy, Daddy worked in the cotton fields, often enduring splitting headaches caused by an unsheathed nerve in his neck. (Of course, that cause wouldn't be known until back surgery revealed it many years later in the 1970s.) The point is life was hard and no one was exempt, not even small boys. Life bumped along through the 1930s, yet Daddy had a vision to work hard and earn success. It's no surprise that in 1942 at the age of 15, Daddy moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where he was able to work construction in the building of the Clinton Laboratories, a significant aspect of the Manhattan Project. Daddy was able to live with his cousins there in Oak Ridge, and so he made his way. As the United States had recently entered World War II, an economic recovery had begun and jobs were opening up. The young man of 15 saw the light dawning, working hard to make his way and improve his lot. But Oak Ridge wasn't a lifelong project, and construction wasn't Daddy's life calling. In February of 1945, Daddy decided to join the Navy. Of course, he was only 17, but he didn't let that stand in the way. He wanted to help with the war effort and be a part of that great nationalism that had swept the United States since the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Even though he was only in the service for a few months before the war ended, he was proud to have served such a great cause. Daddy's naval career went on to include an expedition to Antarctica called Operation Highjump with Adm. Richard Byrd in December of 1946. Daddy's term of naval service was complete in October of 1974, and he returned to Arkansas. After the Navy, Daddy very admirably returned to high school in Forrest City. He graduated in 1949 and went on to attend college at Memphis State for a short time. However, college wasn't a fit, so he soon left school and took a job with Garrison Ready Mix in West Memphis. It was in those days that he met and married Mama. She was a young school teacher at Blytheville and was introduced to him by her good friend, Lois Porter, who had been his teacher at Forrest City High School. Daddy and Mama lived a short time in West Memphis, but it wasn't long before they both wanted to return to the farm setting they knew so well. They moved to Roe, and Daddy began farming with our grandfather, and Mama was hired by Arkansas Rice Growers (Riceland Foods), but eventually moved on to teach history, Spanish and French in the public school system in Clarendon, then later in Stuttgart. Daddy farmed for several years, then received Congressional appointment to be the Roe postmaster in 1985. He also ran a part-time insurance business from 1961 until his USPS retirement when he expanded it to full time. Page 2 of 2 - But through those years, the farm was also an ingrained part of life. Daddy and Mama bought out our grandfather's cattle business and enjoyed running cows for many years. It was a family enterprise, and all of us kids spent plenty of time helping move cattle between pastures, feeding cows and breaking ice for water in the winter months, and mowing pastures in the summer. When Sarah grew up and moved away for a season, one of the biggest losses she experienced was that she missed the times when the cows got out and everyone had to come running to help. Our folks provided us with good times, hard work and rich memories. In 1998, Daddy retired from his insurance business and although he had long since sold off the cows, he returned his focus to the farm where he enjoyed planting and cutting trees, studying farm conservation and hunting quail. Throughout his life, Daddy worked hard and pulled himself up by the bootstraps. No one would wish for hard times and poverty, yet it was Daddy's roots from the Depression that made him such a generous man. He loved to help people try to get ahead, and he did so over and over again through the course of his life. From helping family and friends to helping others he barely knew, he always strove to help folks improve their lot in life. And now Daddy has moved on to a perfect life in a better place as he passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2014. We already miss him, and we're ever grateful for his example and provision. Although today's American dream seems to be winning the lottery, Daddy truly exemplified the American dream of 40 acres and mule. Thomas Edison once said, Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. Our daddy made the most of opportunity and gave us a rich heritage to do the same. The family will receive friends at Grand Prairie Church, 1104 E. 21st in Stuttgart at 10 a.m. Friday with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Lone Tree Cemetery.
