And then far-right radio used her statements in an effort to turn out the anti-Core group for Monday s meeting.An example: Ms. Shanor said the standards are forcing all teachers to teach in the same way. No, they are not.Indeed, all that the Common Core does is set standards for what children should learn. It is the district that prepares the curriculum, and it is up to teachers to execute that as they see fit if they hit the benchmarks. To say the Core makes teachers all teach in the same way is either to speak out of ignorance or to deliberately mislead the public.One more: Ms. Shanor said the Core is removing quality literature from the schools and replacing it with books that harm the minds of children.Again, the standards have nothing to do with which books are chosen. Those selections are made locally with the goal of hitting the benchmarks.Common Core is not forcing a selection of books on anyone, and again Ms. Shanor either is operating out of ignorance or from a purposeful intent to peddle propaganda.Unfortunately, it gets worse.Ms. Shanor now is trying to block new history texts, chosen by the experts of LCSD1, because she sees them as un-American.For example, they mention here we go again climate change, as well as the fact that burning coal pollutes the atmosphere. She also says they do not do enough to protect American culture, whatever that is.In other venues, Ms. Shanor has opposed any mention in texts of slavery, the slaughter of the Native Americans and other historical embarrassments. Apparently she does not believe the truth should be taught.Problem is, Ms. Shanor may not be alone in her efforts. Mr. Bailey has shown similar leanings, though he has not been as outspoken. But he did take Ms. Shanor along to the radio station, and he has not disavowed her anti-Common Core nonsense.Clearly, there is a move afoot both on and off the board to dump the Core.Over the past few weeks, this column has sought to push back against a growing mindset in Laramie County that opposes change and progress. This backtracking on education has exactly the same mission; it just is occurring in another venue.That will be proven on Monday when the Crowd of No turns out in full force to spout its claptrap against the Common Core.The experts have refuted time and again the arguments that its members will make. But like the Agenda 21 crowd which thinks the United Nations is trying to take over the City Council these people connect dots and develop conspiracy theories. They are true believers, and they must not be allowed to take control of LCSD1 s education and the future of this area s children.There are many things not to like about the slow pace of academic progress in LCSD1.
