After raising money for the program at her bakery, Nickerson-Banez began her first Operation Dorm to Gourm class in April. Since then, she has taught more than two dozen airmen basic knife skills, how to break down and use a whole chicken, how to steam fish in the oven and how to make pasta and sauce from scratch. Airman 1st Class Monica Lambertsen lives in the dorms and has attended three Operation Dorm to Gorum classes. This teaches the airman how to cook healthy, instead of always having to go to the dining facility or go out and pick up something to eat, she said. It also helps you interact with other airmen that live in the dorms. Senior Airman Kenneth Taylor and his wife, Caitlan, don t live in the base dorms, but decided to attend one of the classes, just to expand their culinary knowledge. We ve been married less than a year and we weren t into the whole cooking thing, yet, he said. We were going out quite a bit and didn t know where to buy our food that would make it more financially helpful. Now we ve been cooking at the house every night and saving a lot by not going out to eat. Airmen who participate in the class receive not only cooking skills, but also credits they need to be promoted. And airmen aren t the only ones taking notice of the organization.
