I almost chose not to because I already had my other events I was competing in and didn t know if I could handle doing 11 events with quality. Emily, what was the experience like taking first place in the heptathlon Fresno?Mostly, just really surprised! I hadn t expected it at all. What made you decide to compete in the heptathlon?My strength has always been in being able to do a variety of different events. I m not particularity strong in one event, but can do a lot of different things. I can jump, throw, hurdle, sprint, and run distance. Do you have a favorite event?My favorite race is the 100-meter hurdles, but I am strongest in the 800 meter run. Is there one event that you compete in that is most challenging to you?There is a lot of room for improvement in the jumping events such as high jump and long jump just because they are so technical. If I practice and get down the form, I could improve my jumps by a lot and that would really help me in my overall score. It was an awesome experience being there and competing with athletes all across America. I did not have my best performances, however. Doing 11 events the weekend before took a toll on my body and caused me to not be able to perform as well as I was hoping. I m not ready for the season to be over because I still feel like I have a lot left in me. I am planning on competing in some open meets down in San Diego over the summer to get more races and competition. I heard you could not compete your sophomore year due to injury. Can you tell me about that experience? During my sophomore year, I suffered from an injury that they originally thought was compartment syndrome in my calves. I was only able to compete in our first two meets and was out for the rest of the season. We later found out that it was actually a stress fracture which was better in the sense that I wouldn t have to get surgery, but just as disappointing because it still meant that I was out for the rest of the season and was done running for a couple months at the least. It was really discouraging because I had been training so hard all of summer and pre-season to be prepared for when the season came around. And then, when the season finally did come around, I was not able to compete. After my initial frustration, I had a lot of time to think and focus on things that I had been putting off. Track had become my main focus and started to define who I was. I think it s good to be passionate and committed to something, but not when it consumes you as a person. Having the time off helped me to refocus my priorities and realize that my worth was not defined by my performances, but the way in which I responded to the circumstances that I was faced with. I still give 110 percent at every practice and every race, but I don t let my bad performances get me down, and I praise God for the ability that he blesses with me every day, knowing that it could be taken from me at any time. Page 3 of 3 - What type of training and effort does it take to compete in track on the college level?It takes a lot of time and dedication. I thought I was good at managing my time in high school, but doing track in college along with getting through the nursing program and working has taught me time management on a whole other level. You have to decide right off the bat if it s worth the sacrifices that you have to make in order to make it all work. How has the experience been for you being on the track team and going to school at Point Loma Nazarane?At first, I did not like Point Loma. It was really hard to adjust to coming from such a little town. However, I have grown to love this school and the positive environment that it has been in my life, and I guess I can t complain about the amazing oceanfront view of our school either. How did you end up going to school at Point Loma?I found it on a college search engine, it was the only school that popped up that had everything that I was looking for a private school close to the beach with a very credited nursing program, and a Division II track team. What are you majoring in? What do you plan to do once you graduate from college?I am a nursing major and have one more year left in the program. I m not exactly sure what I plan to do right out of college. I haven t decided if I want to start working right away or take a year of and travel first. My long term goals are to become a traveling nurse, or a flight nurse. I am also thinking about going to an art academy after graduating sometime because besides sports, art is one of my biggest passions. I have a lot of things I would like to do. I just don t know the order of how I ll do it yet.
