It is not so much the purpose of Hospice of Texarkana/Hospice of Hope that makes it special as it is the people of Hospice Texarkana/Hope, Joe Schoen, Hope volunteer and board member, and David Bubba Powers, Hope advocate, posed to the Hope Rotary Club recently. The hospice motto is 'Adding life to days' when days can no longer be added to life, Schoen said. They work with the family and the patient; and, they work with the treating physician. It is a wonderful service that they provide. Hospice care is never charged to the family, he said. Hospice Texarkana/Hope is a non-profit organization, he said. We get funded by third parties, whether available through Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance, Schoen explained. But, even with that we will have an average of unfunded care of $200,000 a year. In 2013, Hospice cared for 24 patients from Hempstead County, he said. Among those cases, Schoen said there were $32,000 in unfunded care costs. Our patients run the gamut from indigent to the wealthy; but, they are all treated alike, Schoen said. When you're dealing with terminal illness, it takes everybody to the same level. Hospice programs have grown steadily since 1985, when the organization became the first in Texarkana to provide certified hospice and palliative care physicians, along with nurse practitioners who are similarly qualified, Schoen said. The organization currently participates in the We Honor Veterans program; offers a bereavement program that is open to anyone in the area; sponsors the Good Grief Club in schools to support children and youth; and, operates an in-hospital palliative care program. Care is provided on a strict confidentiality basis, Schoen said. Everything exists to serve the patient and the family, he said. He said Hospice conducts fundraisers throughout the year to help make up the difference; and, Powers noted that, after the passing of his father, he became more personally involved in that effort because he was impressed with the humanity of the organization. Page 2 of 3 - They provided everything we needed; they told us everything we needed to know, Powers said. He said his father, a decorated World War II veteran, was proud of his service and his family; and, Hospice allowed him to maintain the dignity of that pride in his final days by providing care that allowed his family to remain in touch with professionals who understood his needs and their needs. Powers said Schoen was instrumental in his involvement. Powers, the Eighth Judicial District-North Juvenile Intake Officer, had worked with Schoen through CASA, a child advocacy organization. Joe was one five finalists throughout the state of Arkansas as outstanding senior citizens in our entire state, Powers said. Everybody who knows Joe knows how involved he is in our entire community. When Powers learned of his father's condition resulting from Congestive Heart Failure, he said he simply called Schoen to find out what to do. That is the only thing I ever had to do to provide my father with the most wonderful end of life care that I could ever have imagined, he said. Powers said the Hospice program shouldered the load from there onward. They provided beds; they provided nurses; they provided medicine; they would be there as long as we needed them, he said. They told us exactly what was going to happen. Power said when his father became too ill to recover, he called the Hospice group. And, they came; and, they told me, 'He is not going to have any pain and we are going to be right here by your side,' Powers said. That assistance gave Powers time to gather the family without interruption. I'm not a babe in the woods, he said. We've all faced death at different times; but, there is just something really special about having someone who, not only knows that they are doing, but knows what you're going through, and has dealt with it many times; but, the kindness that was shown to me and my family, and my father, committed me for the rest of my life.
