Hospice programs have grown steadily since 1985, when the organization became the first in Texarkana to provide certified hospice and palliative care physicians, along with nurse practitioners who are similarly qualified, Schoen said. The organization currently participates in the We Honor Veterans program; offers a bereavement program that is open to anyone in the area; sponsors the Good Grief Club in schools to support children and youth; and, operates an in-hospital palliative care program. Care is provided on a strict confidentiality basis, Schoen said. Everything exists to serve the patient and the family, he said. He said Hospice conducts fundraisers throughout the year to help make up the difference; and, Powers noted that, after the passing of his father, he became more personally involved in that effort because he was impressed with the humanity of the organization. He said his father, a decorated World War II veteran, was proud of his service and his family; and, Hospice allowed him to maintain the dignity of that pride in his final days by providing care that allowed his family to remain in touch with professionals who understood his needs and their needs.
