Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill.The question is not just one of money, he said, but of morality. Democrats are hoping this latest turn of events might return them to the themes that were so successful for their party and President Obama in 2012 when they convinced swing voters that Democrats were mindful of the best interests of all Americans, not just those who are powerful and wealthy. We havent forgotten about the low-wage workers, Sen. Patty Murray of Washington said, recalling her disappointment at last months Republican-led filibuster of a Senate proposal to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10. But I dont think those who supported us in that effort would want us just to continue the fight to no purpose. We have been trying to find a starting point for a discussion on wage equality for all Americans and raising the Senate minimum wage by $16.35 an hour is as good a place as any to begin this long, hard fight toward economic fairness and upward mobility for all.Speaking from the White House shortly after the Senate approved the measure 101-0, Obama praised that legislative body for its due diligence, and vice president Joseph Biden for casting, in his role as the Senate president, the symbolic 101st vote.Biden, who celebrated the historic session and his unusual vote with a motorcycle ride around the Senate chamber, hailed the moment as one small step for the Senate and vice president and one giant leap for economic justice in America. Both Biden and Obama called on voters to punish at the polls in November any congressman or congresswoman who does not vote for a similar pay increase on the House side, calling it a matter of economic fairness. If theres any good news here, its that Republicans in Congress dont get the last word on this issue and Democrats in Congress dont get the last word on this, Obama said. Were leaving the talking to evenhandedness, integrity, opportunity, and that $16.35 an hour raise. If voters thought the defeat of the minimum wage increase last month had left Democratic lawmakers discouraged, there was no sign of it after this weeks vote in the Senate.Page 2 of 2 - Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., the majority leader, said the unanimous vote gave senators an opportunity to remind voters why they are in control of the Senate. Republicans felt just as strongly, saying that Wednesdays vote was the latest sign that the chamber is finally doing some good for the country.Sen. John Cornyn, the Republican whip from Texas, argued from the Senate floor that raising the minimum wage for Senators would add hundreds of thousands of jobs and repair the fragile economy of the Senate cafeterias, which are going through such a slow recovery that they grew at only 0.1 percent from January through March, new figures released Wednesday showed.Lets talk about the 800-pound gorilla here in the Senate chamber, Cornyn said between bites of his oven-roasted stuffed quailThis is all about America. Its not just about the Senate. This is all about trying to make sure the little guy on this side of Congress gets his fair share. Justice always begins at home. After wrapping Cornyn in a heartfelt bear hug, and inquiring about where to get a plate of quail, Biden urged senators to direct him to any representatives considering voting against the federal minimum wage for the lawmakers in the House.Ill take them for a quick spin around the Senate. If they are on the fence about it, that ought to convince them of the merits and meritocratic nature of this measure, Biden said, using his teeth to tug a leather glove into place on his left hand.Reid, the majority leader, was philosophical about this weeks vote, noting that the effort to improve the lot of low-wage workers was still high on the Democratic Partys agenda. He and his fellow Democrats, he said, would continue to make the case that it is only right that people who are working 40 hours a week get a fair shot at providing for their families. But for now, he said, I guess the best we can do is lead by example.Philip Maddocks writes a weekly satirical column. OK, I guess my feelings are actually somewhere in the middle. Writer-director-producer-star Seth MacFarlanes attempt at joining the ranks of comedy Westerns falls quite short of the marks made by the likes of Blazing Saddles, Cat Ballou, Shanghai Noon and The Lone Ranger. (Yes, folks, The Lone Ranger was a comedy! The studio just forgot to market it that way.)Why did I enjoy MacFarlanes film? Well, its funny, sometimes dipping into the arena of slapstick sight gags; more often going for long, babbling bursts of words; sometimes flipping between gross-out humor and absurd pools-of-blood-style violence. The comedy stays mostly within the confines of the rude and crude kind of thing that MacFarlane presented in Ted. Yes, the movie made me laugh.MacFarlane stars as Albert, a disorganized sheepherder in 1882 Arizona (the film goes out of its way to let us know were in Arizona even though it freely uses Utahs Monument Valley as its physical setting). He hates the West and everything about it, but has somehow managed to carve out a life made reasonably happy due to his girlfriend, Louise (Amanda Seyfried, who, in my book, exists as a red flag of annoyance any time she appears in a movie). The story opens with Albert whiningly and babblingly trying to talk his way out of a gunfight with an angry cattleman whos accused him of letting his sheep graze in cattle country. This results in Louise dumping him because A) hes a coward, she needs to find herself, C) shes taken up with the smarmy Foy (Neil Patrick Harris), successful owner of the towns moustacherie (and wearer of an outstandingly twirly moustache). But before the story gets too involved with the shattered Alberts sudden loneliness, the bad guy arrives. That would be Clinch (Liam Neeson, Irish brogue in full flower, great in the part), known by all as the most vicious gunfighter in the territory. In tow are his motley gang and his gorgeous wife, Anna (Charlize Theron). There are two things you need to know in advance about this film. First, the constantly changing storyline doesnt follow any rules of order; things seem to happen because they just happen, not because they make any sense. Second, if you havent watched any preview trailers for the film, do not start now. If you have seen any of them, youve also already seen most of the good gags. Why did I not enjoy MacFarlanes film? Because its terribly uneven, and is played too broadly. Sometimes theres too much comedy, other times theres too much drama. Most of the comedy is too raucous and in the worst of taste, such as in a couple of unnecessarily scenes that give new meaning to the term toilet humor. Its in these cases that MacFarlane is acting (and writing and directing) as if hes a little kid getting a kick out of being naughty. When it goes into dramatic areas, some of it is just too brutal. Yeah, we get it that Clinch is a bad guy, but we dont really need him to make us flinch by his actions.Page 2 of 2 - So I dont know exactly where I stand on this odd, funny, troubling movie. The supporting characters are fun, including Edward (Giovanni Ribisi), the incredibly understanding celibate boyfriend of the very popular town hooker (Sarah Silverman). The cameos are plentiful (the only one Ill give away here is Gilbert Gottfrieds bizarre take on Abe Lincoln). MacFarlane and his special effects crew have devised one of cinemas best psychedelic drug scenes. Good use is made of the naturally panoramic West. And in the scenes shared by MacFarlane and Theron, she is laughing so hard and so freely, theres no doubt that hes ad-libbing or at least hitting her with dialogue she didnt know was coming. But theres one other problem. No comedy needs to go more than 90 minutes. This one runs for two hours, and burns out very early on.Ed Symkus covers movies for More Content Now.A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WESTWritten by Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin, Wellesley Wild; directed by Seth MacFarlaneWith Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Sarah Silverman and lots of cameosRated R g rayban outlet The article itself does a pretty good job focusing on the science in the report and calling the detractors what they are: "fossil energy groups, conservative think tanks and Republican senators." ray ban discount 05/17/2014 06:46:03 PM MDTClick photo to enlargeCalifornia Chrome, ridden by jockey Victor Espinoza, wins the 139th Preakness Stakes horse race at Pimlico Race Course, Saturday, May 17, 2014, in Baltimore.
